Fields like physics, astrophysics, AI, electronics, etc. tend to suffer in the Philippines because of the lack of facilities and research institutions dedicated to them. But conversely, fields like biology, agriculture, food processing, and conservation have extensive research infrastructure in the Philippines (a legacy of the American commonwealth era), so Filipinos tend to excel more in those. The most prominent example of these research institutions is perhaps the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), which is based in the Philippines. It is the largest non-profit agricultural research center in Asia. It was responsible for developing numerous cultivars that allowed rice to be cultivated on an industrial scale throughout Asia in the 1960s. 60% of the worlds rice crops are either IRRI-developed or descendants of IRRI cultivars.
